The ceremony, held at the Phuket Deep Sea Port, commemorated the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
The vessel will be used for Thai students to undergo training in marine research practices and techniques.
The event was presided over by Phuket Vice Governor General Adul Chuthong and attended by high-ranking officials from both countries.
Among the guests were Pinsak Suraswadi, Director-General of Thailand’s Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR); Prof Dr Li Tianyang, Director of the Chinese Institute of Oceanography, Vice Admiral Klaturat Chulalayanon representing the Royal Thai Navy, and Rear Admiral Surajit Kocharatkul, Commander of the Third Naval Area Command.
Phuket’s selection as the host location for the research vessel underscores the province’s role in international scientific collaboration, Vice Governor Adul said.
“The ‘Xiang Yang Hong 01’ plays an important role in marine research and oceanographic technology, symbolizing the deep-rooted friendship and cooperation between Thailand and China in scientific innovation,” he added.
Beyond economic and tourism partnerships, Thailand and China have strengthened their cooperation in marine science and technology. The research exhibition aboard the vessel showcased advancements in marine conservation and sustainable resource utilisation, aligning with both countries’ policies on environmental protection and the development of the marine economy, said an official report of the event.
Attendees had the opportunity to explore the vessel’s marine research facilities, which support oceanographic studies and foster further scientific collaboration between the two nations, the report added.
Closing the event, Vice Governor Adul delivered a congratulatory address, emphasising the importance of ongoing collaboration in marine science.
He expressed optimism for future joint initiatives and extended his best wishes for the continued success of marine research efforts between Thailand and China.
