The incident occurred at around 8am in open waters between Phuket and Koh Yao. Initial reports indicated only minor damage to both vessels.
According to the captain of the cargo ship, the collision happened when the sailboat came unusually close while appearing to have no one at the helm. “I sounded the horn to warn the foreign sailor, but he was unable to regain control of his vessel in time to avoid the collision,” the captain said.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident and are assessing the extent of the damage. Maritime officials said both parties will be questioned to determine the cause of the crash and any liability under marine safety regulations.
