Police were alerted to the discovery at around 10am by a member of the public.
Officers from Tha Chatchai Police Station, joined by rescue workers from Kusoldharm Phuket Foundation Mai Khao Tambon Administrative Organisation (OrBorTor) arrived to find the body hanged from a tree close to the water.
The deceased was wearing a red round-neck T-shirt and black shorts. He was later identified as Chatchai Kitchaman, 45.
Authorities estimated that he had been dead for at least two days.
His body was found hanged above a makeshift camp, where Mr Chatchai was believed to be living.
Rescue personnel had to cut through tree branches to retrieve the body, which was then brought ashore for further examination. A white cloth was used to cover the body before transportation.
A witness who discovered the body told police that he had been walking near the pier when he noticed something unusual in the trees. On closer inspection, he realised it was a man hanged from a rope and immediately contacted authorities.
Investigators recorded the scene and interviewed the witness before contacting the deceased’s family to arrange for religious rites.
The death is under investigation to determine whether it was suicide, police noted.
