The speedboat operator involved has been fined B10,000 for his Russian tourist guests to drink and smoke while within the park’s boundaries ‒ and has been banned from re-entering the park, officials confirmed.
Saengsuri Songthong, Head of Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, said the incident occurred at Ao Pileh at Koh Phi Phi Ley, renowned for its emerald green waters and towering limestone cliffs. The lagoon is a popular spot for snorkelling and kayaking.
After images of the incident surfaced online, park officials quickly launched an investigation, gathering evidence from witnesses and tour operators, reported the DNP.
The officers confirmed that a group of tourists had chartered a speedboat and brought alcoholic beverages into the protected area ‒ an act that is strictly prohibited.
The consumption of alcohol within national parks violates the National Park Act B.E. 2562 and regulations issued in 2020, which ban the sale or consumption of alcohol inside park boundaries.
“The park has repeatedly emphasised the rules to tour operators, guides and tourists through signs and verbal briefings before entry,” Mr Saengsuri said. “We make every effort to ensure visitors are aware of and comply with the regulations,” the DNP reported through a post online.
Following the incident, the DNP Director-General, Athapol Charoenshunsa, has ordered stricter enforcement measures, the DNP said in its post.
All tour operators have been reminded of their responsibilities, and the boat involved in this case is now barred from the park.
Officials are also working with Koh Phi Phi Police Station in order to issue fines against the offending tourists, the DNBP said.
The DNP urged tour operators, guides and the public to report any violations they witness.
