Beach cleanup marks Mother’s Day with tribute to Queen Mother

PHUKET: Layan Beach was the centre of a large-scale environmental drive yesterday (Aug 12) as hundreds of volunteers joined the ‘United in Loyalty, Planting Beach Reforestation – BIG CLEANING DAY 10 Beautiful Beaches’ event in honour of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, on Mother’s Day.

The initiative, led by the Andaman Resources Conservation Foundation, saw participants collect marine debris, clean the shoreline and plant 94 fig trees along the coast at Layan beach within Sirinat National Park. The aim was to restore the richness of the beach ecosystem and raise awareness of sustainable natural resource management.

Foundation Secretary-General Samran Sinthong presided over the opening ceremony, with youth groups, students, local residents, business representatives and officials from government and private agencies all lending their hands. Among those supporting the effort were the Cherng Talay Tambon Administrative Organisation (OrBorTor), Sirinat National Park, Phuket Wittayalai School and Anantara Layan Phuket Resort.

The event not only paid tribute to the monarchy, but also promoted the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy, encouraging the careful and appreciative use of natural resources as part of the community’s long-term sustainable development, said an official report of the event.

Despite being a day for family celebrations, many participants chose to spend their Mother’s Day working to beautify the coastline, braving the heavy weather to carry on their tasks with determination. The CP ALL network, under which 7-Elevens operate, provided snacks and drinks, helping to keep spirits high and energy levels up.

The Andaman Resources Conservation Foundation said the event was one of a series of coordinated clean-ups taking place across 10 beaches in the region, reinforcing community ties and strengthening efforts to protect the Andaman Sea for future generations.
