Phuket Town Deputy Mayor Supachoke Laongphet led an inspection of the Klong Bang Yai area next to Sanam Luang (The King’s Public Park) on Monday (May 27) in preparation for a volunteer-driven canal-clearing effort to begin on Friday (May 31).

The inspection focused on ensuring the readiness of the site for the upcoming volunteer activities aimed at improving the region’s water sources, including ditches and canals, said an official report of the inspection.

The highlight of the initiative is the dredging of the Bang Yai Canal, which is part of the ‘Puang Pracha Project’ ‒ a collective effort to conserve and enhance local water resources, the report added.

Scheduled to start at 9am Friday, the project aims to bring together various community and government stakeholders. During the site visit, Mr Supachoke was accompanied by key officials including Phuket City Municipality Palad (Chief Administrative Officer) Pranom Tansakul; local Phuket resident Wuttichai Bamrungrat; and Natthapat Nuikhadee, Director of the Civil Engineering Department of Phuket City Municipality.

Heads of local government departments, representatives from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment Phuket office and other related officials also took part in the inspection.

“This initiative not only underscores the community’s dedication to environmental conservation but also serves as a tribute to His Majesty the King’s enduring legacy and commitment to sustainable development,” the official report noted.

The canal-clearing activities to come on Friday will follow officials from Phuket Provincial Administration Organisation (PPAO) dredging water hyacinth from a canal near Soi Phuket Rajabhat University to prevent flooding in the area.

Previous flooding in the area affected more than 30 households, noted a report of that canal-clearing effort.
