Phuket motorcyclist Udom Haadsoi, 61, and his female passenger Kwanta Haadsoi, 53, sustained fatal injuries after their red Honda PCX was wiped out by a pickup truck on Phra Phuket Kaew Rd in Kathu at about 6.30pm on May 7.

The driver of the pickup, Montree Saengnak, 46, suffered no injuries in the accident. All of his passengers, 10 workers sitting in the trunk, sustained injuries of varying extents.

Mr Montree explained that he was driving at about 60km/h when he lost control of the pickup as the road was slippery after a light rain. The truck crossed the central reservation and hit the motorbike before flipping onto its side.

On Thursday (May 23), representatives of Ergo Insurance Plc and Allianz Insurance Plc arrived at Phuket Provincial Hall to hand the compensation to the relatives of the deceased Mr Udom and Ms Kwanta. Both companies paid B500,000 for each death, resulting in a total amount of B2 million paid in compensation.

Ergo Insurance provided the state-mandated insurance for the pickup truck Mr Montree was driving at the time of the accident, while Allianz provided additional voluntary insurance, the Phuket offices of the Public Relations Department (PR Phuket) explained in a statement.

PR Phuket confirmed that provincial authorities oversaw proper coverage of medical expenses for the treatment of the injuries sustained by the ten workers sitting as passengers in the pickup truck.

The names and nationalities of the workers have not been revealed. Pictures from the scene show some injured being taken to an ambulance on stretchers, while others did not have any visible injuries.

At last report, Mr Montree was being detained for further questioning and legal action. Nothing has been reported since May 7 about any charges against him.
