American citizen James Everett du Bois was at the beach with his wife and 3-year-old son, explained Rawai Mayor Aroon Solos.

While in the water, the family encountered a strong rip current. The wife was able to make it back to the beach, but Mr du Bois was dragged out to sea, Mayor Aroon said.

Lifeguards immediately launched a search for Mr du Bois, but were unable to find him.

A more intensive search was launched by rescue workers from the Kusoldharm Foundation last night, but also was unable to find him.

The search was called off at 8:30pm due to the strong waves and weather conditions, Mr Aroon said.

So far today there have been no updates as to the search efforts.
