A 15-day public hearing process to gather opinions on the lifting of the ban has ended, he said on yesterday (Dec 2). He believes the new regulation can be announced ahead of year-end celebrations, reports the Bangkok Post.
However, not every shop can apply the new regulation, he said, acknowledging there had been widespread misunderstandings. Only registered establishments, including grocery stores, will be allowed to sell alcoholic beverages between 2pm and 5pm, he said.
Drinking on premises, meanwhile, will be permitted until 1am but sales must end at 12 midnight, Mr Sophon said.
The revocation of the afternoon sales ban was agreed on by the National Alcohol Policy Committee on Nov 13. It followed widespread public criticism of a new rule that imposes a B10,000 fine on individuals for drinking outside permitted times.
The decision to end the ban in place since 1972 was aimed at stimulating tourism and economic activity during peak tourism periods such as New Year and Songkran.
