Phuket Life

Travel
My passion for cycling arrived at about the same time as my passion for trout fishing, when I was a slip of a lad of 10 summers or so. I was lucky enough to find myself growing up in a family of keen anglers and spent many happy boyhood hours with my grandfather, father and sundry Scottish uncles trying to entice trout onto the end of a line and subsequently into a frying pan.

It’s 7am on a dark, drizzling London morn. I scurry, beetle-like, head bowed, through the traffic to the tube station. Jammed into the narrow confines of the hurtling cylinder on the Piccadilly Line my bleary eye catches sight of an advertisement.

Comfortably seated within his hilltop eerie at the magnificent Seven Seas restaurant atop luxurious Pimalai Resort, Franck de Lestapis, the jovial General Manager, surveys the fiefdom spread gloriously around him. Our Jungle Camp - Thai youngsters turn environmentalists

Environment
The Wall Street Journal recently reported that Thailand ranked sixth overall in the global league table of plastic polluters... that’s not pro-rated to population. Thailand is in fact the twentieth most populated country on earth, so that makesThailand’s populace world-class polluters. They pollute far above their numbers, they throw away more garbage per person than almost any other nation.

The so-called Green Season is upon us in Phuket, a marketer’s name for the rainy season if ever I heard one! Do those marketing Johnnies really think that by not mentioning the dreaded words “rainy, monsoon, wet” and so on that they can fool everyone into believing that we don’t get just the occasional drenching at this time of year?
A Canter Around Lanta
Phuket Life

Koh Lanta is about four hours’ drive south from the bridge off Phuket and when I first visited the island back in 2004, just before the tsunami, I described it as “Paradise Postponed” in several articles I wrote.
Blazing Saddles: Riding in Hat Thai Mueang National Park is like stepping back in time

I am by no means original in my thoughts regarding the ability to travel through time on a bicycle. The Victorian novelist HG Wells was a tremendous bicycle lover to whom the quote, “Whenever I see an adult on a bicycle, I do not despair for the future of the human race” is often attributed.
The Boathouse is Phuket's quintessential sunset dining destination
Phuket Life

Sunset! It’s one of the most primal of our daily experiences and yet so often missed or taken for granted. In the hurly-burly of our modern time-stressed lives, how often do we take the time to calmly sit, stare and fully immerse ourselves in this most beautiful part of simply being alive?

The Fat Chef and the art of eating
Phuket Life

Setting off to review a new Phuket restaurant named The Fat Chef it’s doubtless a cliché to entertain images of a large, smiling, rotund man in a toque, perhaps gaily waving a skillet, in one’s mind.
